In 1697 the Russian czar Peter the Great, 25 years old at the time, visited The Netherlands. Under the pseudonym Pyotr Mikhailov, he was able to see how the windmills and the shipbuilding industry of Zaandam operated, working incognito at Lijns Teeuwisz Rogge’s shipyard. The tsar planned to spend an entire winter here. In 2007 Anastasia Khoroshilova, a Russian photographer trained in Germany, visited The Netherlands and portrayed the people working at five historic Shipyards, as well as the tools and machinery with which they work.
